The APEX ACL Protocol
The surgery is decided in an hour. The outcome is decided over the next year.
Return-to-sport decisions involve healing time, symptoms, physical testing, confidence and the demands of your activity. This guide helps you prepare for those discussions with your care team.
The APEX ACL Protocol is a guide to understanding your own recovery — what each stage is for, what's being measured, how to film your own movement so your therapist can see what you can't, and how to ask for testing without picking a fight with your care team.
APEX is the rehabilitation framework used at Human 2.0, an orthopaedic and sports medicine facility in South Keys, Ottawa.
Seven documents
- Start Here — how to use this without crossing the line into running your own rehab
- The Decision — surgery or not, what cross bracing does and doesn't do, and associated meniscus considerations
- The Phase Gates — all six APEX phases with entry and exit criteria for each
- How You Move — the self-filming protocol: angles, movements, and what to look for
- Criterion Testing — all 7 checks expanded, plus a tracking sheet
- The Clearance Conversation — how to advocate for yourself without antagonising your team
- Reintegration — graded return to cutting and contact, and the risk to your other knee
What it is not: a rehab program. There are no exercises in it, deliberately. It is not a way to decide you're ready, and it does not replace your physiotherapist.
⚠ ACL rehabilitation must be supervised in person by a licensed physiotherapist, athletic therapist, athletic trainer, or physician. This product is education and self-advocacy. Every module directs every outcome — including good results — back to your care team. Maximum understanding, zero self-clearance. If you don't have a supervising clinician, get one before buying this.
Digital delivery after purchase. You receive seven separate PDF files.
Download and save each PDF somewhere permanent. No ZIP file is required.
General educational information only. Not medical advice, and no physician-patient relationship is created. Nothing here clears you for any activity or for return to sport. Individual results vary.
