Mobility myths: what stretching can and can't do

Stretching is one of the most widely practised and least understood things people do with their bodies. Most of what gets repeated about it in gyms and classes is either outdated or was never true. Sorting that out matters, because the wrong model of what stretching does leads people to spend years on something that was never going to solve their problem.

Myth: stretching lengthens your muscles

This is the big one, and almost everything else follows from it. When you stretch and your range improves within a session, your muscle has not gotten longer. What changes first and fastest is your tolerance — how far into the range your nervous system will let you go before it protests. Longer-term stretching programs can produce some real change in tissue properties, but the effect is smaller and slower than the popular version implies, and it reverses when you stop.

This is not a reason to never stretch. It is a reason to stop expecting stretching alone to permanently change how your body is built.

Myth: flexible means mobile

Flexibility is how far a joint can be moved. Mobility is how far you can move it yourself, with control, under load. Those are different capacities, and the gap between them is where most problems live.

Plenty of very flexible people have almost no strength at the end of their range. They can be pushed into a deep position but cannot get there or hold there on their own. That end-range is not usable — it is available, but the body does not trust it. Adding more passive range to a joint you cannot already control is not progress.

Myth: stretching before activity prevents injury

This one has been studied a great deal and the evidence does not support it. Static stretching before sport has not been shown to reduce injury rates. It can temporarily reduce force and power output, which is why it fell out of favour as a warm-up.

What does look protective is less romantic: sensible progression of training load, adequate strength for what you are asking your body to do, and a warm-up that actually raises temperature and rehearses the movement. If you enjoy stretching, stretch. Just do not count it as your injury prevention plan.

Myth: tightness means the muscle needs stretching

"Tight" is a sensation, not a diagnosis. A muscle can feel tight because it is short, but it can equally feel tight because it is working hard, because it is guarding an irritated joint, because it is weak in that position, or because you have been in one posture for three hours. Those situations call for very different responses, and stretching helps in only some of them.

The common example is hamstrings that feel tight for years no matter how much they are stretched. Often the issue is not hamstring length at all. If stretching something has not changed it in six months, the model is wrong, not your discipline.

Myth: foam rolling and massage guns release the tissue

They feel good, and that is a legitimate reason to use them. What the evidence supports is a short-term change in perceived stiffness and soreness — typically lasting minutes, not days. There is no good evidence that rolling breaks up adhesions, lengthens fascia, or produces lasting structural change. Use these tools as a way to feel more comfortable moving, not as treatment.

Myth: touching your toes is the standard

Toe-touching is a spine and hamstring test that has become a general-purpose verdict on whether your body is any good. It is not. Range of motion varies enormously between people for reasons that include bone shape, which no amount of stretching changes.

The more useful question is whether you have the range you need for the things you actually do, and whether you can control it. A runner needs functional ankle range. A person who gardens needs to get to the floor and back. Neither requires a specific number on a sit-and-reach box.

What this means for you

Stretching is worth doing if you like how it feels and it helps you get into positions you want to use. It is not a way to lengthen tissue permanently, it is not injury insurance, and it is not a substitute for building strength through the range you are trying to open up.

If a stiff, restricted area is limiting what you can do, the answer is usually to train control and strength into that range rather than to stretch harder. One thing an article cannot do is tell you why a specific area feels restricted. Stiffness that has persisted for months, or that comes with pain, weakness or a joint that catches, deserves a proper assessment rather than a longer stretching routine.
